Red Sox clinch World Series

David Ortiz was quick to praise the Boston fans after the Red Sox clinched their third World Series in the last ten years with victory against the St Louis Cardinals.

The Red Sox won Game 6 at Fenway Park 6-1 to send the home fans into raptures and Series MVP Ortiz said after the success: ''This is for you, Boston. You guys deserve it.

''We have a lot of players with heart. We probably don't have the talent that we had in '07 and '04, but we have guys that are capable (of staying) focused and do the little things."

For the first time since Babe Ruth's team won the World Series in 1918, Boston clinched the title at Fenway Park.

We have a lot of players with heart.

Shane Victorino returned from a stiff back to hit a three-run double off Michael Wacha while John Lackey became the first pitcher to start and win a Series clincher following his success with the Angels in 2002.

Japanese pitcher Koji Uehara struck out Matt Carpenter for the final out after Stephen Drew had sent Michael Wacha's first pitch of the fourth into the right-center bullpen for a 4-0 lead.

RBI singles by Mike Napoli and Shane Victorino made it 6-0, as St Louis failed to clinch their second title in three seasons.

''They were some frustrated guys in there, but overall you can't ask us to go about any better than how our guys did,'' said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny afterwards. ''Not too many people expected us to do what we did.''

Meanwhile in American football, the Seattle Seahawks are 1/2 to win Super Bowl XLVIII outright while Cincinnati Bengals can be backed at 1212/1.
