Peavy wins in Red Sox debut
Jake Peavy opened up his Boston account with a 5-2 victory on Saturday as the Red Sox defeated the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks at Fenway Park.
The former Chicago White Sox pitcher went 7+ on the evening, allowing both Arizona runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven. It was exactly the kind of solid start that Boston envisioned when they traded Jose Iglesias and three prospects to pick up the veteran right-hander at the trading deadline. Shane Victorino and Jarrod Saltalamacchia each went deep in support as the Red Sox bounced back from Friday's one run defeat and Felix Doubront will get the call in Sunday's finale. The visitors are scheduled to counter with Brandon McCarthy who returns to the mound for the first time in over two months.
Down at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg the Tampa Bay Rays kept pace with Boston after defeating the visiting San Francisco Giants 2-1 in extra innings. Wil Myers bases-loaded single to right field brought home Desmond Jennings with the winning run in the 10th inning on Saturday after David Price had gone the first nine innings for the hosts, but left without the decision. Fernando Rodney (4-2) recorded the victory with an inning of relief as the Rays overcame a strong effort from San Francisco's Tim Lincecum.
Sunday Guillermo Moscoso gets the start for the Giants instead of Barry Zito and Tampa Bay will send Roberto Hernandez to the hill in opposition.
The Red Sox are 5/7 to win the World Series, the Giants are priced at 500/1 and the Rays are 500/1.
