Nadal confident ahead of return

Rafael Nadal missed out on the Olympics, the US Open and the ATP World Tour Finals as a result of a chronic knee complaint.

Former world number one Rafael Nadal has vowed to get back to his best after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Nadal hasn't featured in a competitive game since his shock second-round exit at Wimbledon due to tendinitis in his knee.

The 26-year-old is finally set to make his return in an exhibition match in Abu Dhabi on December 27 and will compete in the 2013 Australian Open.

Nadal, who has completed a career grand slam of all four major titles and an Olympic gold medal, has slipped to number four in the world rankings as a result of his enforced absence but the Spaniard is desperate to get back to his best.

The Spanish star refused to offer a prediction of when he will be back to his best, but Nadal is eager to recapture top form after a lengthy spell away from the game.

"I am working to return to being the same as I was before the injury and am sure that we are going to make it," said the seven times French Open champion.

"My goal, when I return, is to give it all I've got. If my maximum is enough to be No. 1, then I'm happy, and if it's enough to be No. 8, then I'll be happy also."

Nadal is 500/1 to be crowned champion in Melbourne in 2013, with Novak Djokovic 1/1 and US Open champion Andy Murray 5/2.
