Rooney in line for shock return

Wayne Rooney could be a shock inclusion in the Manchester United side for tonight's Champions League group opener against Galatasaray.

Wayne Rooney has been training for the last five days.

The former Everton striker has an 80 per cent chance of making Sir Alex Ferguson's selection, according to sources at the club's Carrington training base.

United, 2/7 to win the Old Trafford clash with Robin van Persie 13/5 to open the scoring, have revealed that Rooney has been training in secret for the last five days.

He has been given the all-clear by doctors to resume playing following the horrific thigh gash injury he sustained against Fulham last month.

Sir Alex will again consult with his medical staff before kick-off and Rooney may be an option from the substitutes' bench, with a view towards Sunday's game against Liverpool at Anfield.

United are 7/4 to beat Liverpool this weekend and are 2000/1 to win this season's Champions League.

Van Persie is set to lead the United attack against a Galatasaray team that have failed to win on seven previous European visits to England.
