Arsene Wenger felt his Arsenal players were "too nervous" as they began the season with a home defeat to West Ham.
The Gunners had gone into the game full of confidence as talk of a potential title bid has dominated pre-season and they defeated Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley last weekend.
With the champions being held at home by Swansea on Saturday it was an opportunity to make an opening statement for Arsenal but they passed up tamely with a lacklustre display.
Arsenal rarely threatened the visitor's goal and found themselves behind when summer signing Petr Cech misjudged a free-kick into his box allowing Cheikhou Kouyate to nod in right on half time.

It got worse for Cech when he was wrong-footed by Mauro Zarate's shot after Arsenal had slackly given away possession deep in their own half.
Afterwards, the Arsenal boss did little to hide his disappointment in the overall performance from his team.
"We were not convincing offensively or defensively. I knew it could be a tricky game; if you can't win the game, make sure you don't lose it," Wenger said.
Wenger felt his players were suffering from nerves and he also suggested there may be some mental scars.
"The players were maybe too nervous and put too much pressure on themselves. Today we have been hurt mentally and it is a good opportunity to respond," he added.
Arsenal are now 1/1 to win the title this season following this defeat but it was the perfect start for Slaven Bilic in his first Premier League game as a manager.
West Ham face Leicester at home in their next game on Saturday. The Hammers are sure to be confident and they are 1/1 to continue their winning start.
