Real Madrid are refusing to make a realistic offer for Spain goalkeeper David de Dea, according to Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.
The 24-year-old will not be involved when the former champions open their Premier League account against Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday because van Gaal believes speculation about a summer move back to his homeland is affecting his goalkeeper.
"The last two years he was nominated by the fans as the best player at the club. Do you think the coach wants him to leave? I don't think so."Louis van Gaal
The former Atletico Madrid stopper only has a year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and van Gaal has told the Spanish capital giants they must meet United's valuation.
"We are asking money and they have to pay money," the former Netherlands coach told reporters.
"In recent years Manchester United have paid a lot of money on players and not received a lot for our players."
De Gea was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer of 2011 on a five-year deal and is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.
"He's the best goalkeeper we've had for the last three years, I believe," van Gaal added.
"The last two years he was nominated by the fans as the best player at the club. Do you think the coach wants him to leave? I don't think so. The player still has to manage this situation."
Van Gaal said he was concerned ongoing speculation about de Gea's future is affecting his goalkeeper's form and revealed he will not be risked against Tottenham.
"We've observed him in training sessions and matches and he's not the David de Gea of last year," the former Bayern Munich coach said.
"He tries and does (his) utmost best, but it's a difficult situation. Now we have to play our first match and I want players who can focus only on the match and he is not capable to do that.
"He shall not play."
Manchester United are currently priced 1/1 in the match betting and the draw outcome is quoted 1/1. Tottenham are available to back in the 90 minutes market at 1/1.
