Fit-again Kompany to face Sunderland

Vincent Kompany has recovered from a groin strain and will take his place at the heart of Manchester City's defence at Sunderland today.

Vincent Kompany has missed the last two games with a groin strain.

The Blues' central defensive skipper has missed the last two victories over Newcastle United and Reading but was able to train fully on Christmas Day.

The Belgian will be hoping he and his team-mates can finally get it right at the Stadium of Light and keep the pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester United.

City are 11/2 to win 2-0 at the Stadium of Light and 50/1 to retain their Premier League title.

Roberto Mancini's side team have lost 1-0 on their previous two visits to Wearside, both times to a stoppage-time goal against the Black Cats, despite dominating proceedings.

Mario Balotelli is still battling a virus, and a place on the bench could be the best he can hope for, with Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero both expected to lead the line again for the champions.

And Mancini insists his players will now have to play it a 'little smarter' against Martin O'Neill's struggling outfit.

The City boss said: "We have lost the last two games at Sunderland in the last minute because we were trying to win and conceded on the counter-attack. It will be a tough game again."
