Per Mertesacker believes Arsenal need to show they can be more consistent this season and is hoping they can get off to a winning start by beating Chelsea on Sunday.
The Gunners face last season's Premier League champions at Wembley in the Community Shield just over two months after thrashing Aston Villa 4-0 in the FA Cup final.
Germany international Mertesacker thinks Arsene Wenger's side can learn a lot from Chelsea, who ran away with last season's Premier League title.
I think if we can learn something from Chelsea, it's to be consistent over the whole season.Per Mertesacker
He said: "The hunger to retain the shield is still there. Winning a trophy would add to the team's confidence, especially a week before the season starts.
"We haven't played Chelsea at Wembley in such a situation for a long time. They played really well last season, they were really consistent and always defended well from the front. I think if we can learn something from Chelsea, it's to be consistent over the whole season.
"I believe we have a good base, a good structure and a good balance. We showed that in the second half of last season. We didn't concede a lot of goals and that's the target for the first matches, especially for the first half of the season."
Arsenal are 1/1 to lift the trophy while Alexis Sanchez is 1/1 to score at any time at Wembley. Meanwhile, the Gunners are 1/1 to win the Premier League title outright in 2015/16 and 1/1 to win the FA Cup.
