Vidal targeting World Cup glory

Arturo Vidal is already plotting World Cup success with Chile.

Arturo Vidal is adamant that Chile will target the 2018 World Cup following their penalty shootout win against Argentina in the Copa America final.

The 28-year-old Juventus midfielder played a key role in helping his country claim their first major trophy on home soil in the Estadio Nacional de Chile on Saturday night, but it was Arsenal midfielder Alexis Sanchez who converted the winning spot-kick in the shoot-out after the final ended goalless after 90 minutes.

Gonzalo Higuain almost snatched the trophy for Argentina but he could not convert at the back post in the final minute of the game and the Napoli hitman then missed his penalty when he fired over the bar.

We'll fight a lot in the next World Cup. This generation of players deserved this.

Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo also saved from Ever Banega as the hosts scored all four of their penalties to win the title and sent the home fans into raptures.

Having ended their trophy drought Vidal immediately set his sights on guiding Chile to more success on a bigger stage at the World Cup in Russia in three years' time.

He said: "This is a dream come true, this team deserves something like this.

"We left our life on the field. Chilean people needed this joy and we managed to give it to them.

"We'll fight a lot in the next World Cup. This generation of players deserved this."

Chile are 12121/1 to win the 2018 World Cup, while reigning champions Germany can be backed at 12121/1 and Brazil 12121/1.
