Roy Hodgson's men were underwhelming at the recent World Cup in Brazil.

England boss Roy Hodgson has admitted getting over the Three Lions' dismal World Cup campaign will take a while for both him and his players.

Hodgson's men crashed out of the showpiece tournament in Brazil having failed to pick up a single win – with a lone point against Costa Rica meaning that they finished bottom of their group.

For me, the future does look bright but we are going to have to go through a further period of pain, I fear, because we are not going to turn everyone's perception around within a game or two.

Attention has now turned to Euro 2016, with the qualifiers set to begin on Monday when England face Switzerland in Basel. England are 1/1 to win, with the Swiss 1/1 and the draw 1/1.

Just 40,181 fans attended a friendly against Norway at Wembley on Wednesday – the lowest attendance for an England game since the new Wembley reopened – and Hodgson admits that there is a lot of work to do to convince the fans.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek, Hodgson said: "You don't get over that kind of disappointment and shock in a summer.

"It's going to take a lot of time before we can even put that into some kind of perspective."

He continued: "For me, the future does look bright but we are going to have to go through a further period of pain, I fear, because we are not going to turn everyone's perception around within a game or two.

"But I am 100% certain that the quality of these players and the football that they play will ensure that our fans not only stay with us, but will be very happy with what they see."

Meanwhile, Hodgson said he has been hardened by the experience in Brazil, and confidently predicted that England would feature at Euro 2016. He went on to stress that the team has largely been revamped since 2012 and that the experience, talent and potential is in place to do well.

England are 1/1 to win Euro 2016, with Switzerland 1/1.
