Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is adamant veteran keeper Victor Valdes must prove himself for the club's reserves if he is to get first-team action.
The former Barcelona star sustained a serious knee injury before training with United and earning himself an 18-month deal.
However Valdes has made just one appearance for the Red Devils since moving to Old Trafford and Van Gaal has urged the 33-year-old to impress in the second team if he is to challenge first-choice keeper David de Gea.
He said: "When you are out for more than a year, first of all you have to show yourself at a lower level.
"He has to do it in the second team.
"Like Ashley Young is doing that, like Michael Carrick has to do that. It is always the same. I think it is normal."
Valdes will be hoping he can secure his second appearance for the club, when they face Preston in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
United are 1/1 to win, 1/1 to draw and 1/1 to lose in the clash the Deepdale on Monday.
