Karanka's new duo goals hope

Aitor Karanka is hoping his two new signings will add some goals to the team.

Aitor Karanka is hoping the imminent arrival of Christian Stuani and Diego Fabbrini will help solve his Middlesbrough side's goalscoring problem.

The Boro boss watched his players again struggle in front of goal in their pre-season friendly game against League One side Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday as they were held to a 0-0 draw.

It left Boro with just one goal from three games in the space of a week against teams from the lower leagues and is the same old story for Karanka who highlighted the lack of goals as the reason why the losing Championship play-off finalists missed out on automatic promotion last season.

Both will be very important players for us, both want to join us and they had better options or better contracts elsewhere.

He said: "Last season was the same, while teams who got promoted scored 80 or 90 goals we scored 50 or 60, so the difference is the goals and this season we're having the same problem.

"We have to improve and score more goals."

The Spanish tactician is hoping Uruguay international striker Stuani, who is joining in a £3.6million deal from Espanyol, and Italian attacking midfielder Fabbrini, who is coming in on a season-long loan from Watford, will improve Boro in the final third of the field.

On the duo, who both warmed up with the team before the match on Saturday, Karanka added in the Gazette: "They are with us and we need to finish the paperwork and hopefully they can be with us as soon as possible.

"Both will be very important players for us, both want to join us and they had better options or better contracts elsewhere.

"But they wanted to join us, so if we can finally sign them they will improve the squad and I'll be very pleased."

Boro are 1/1 to win the Championship title this season, while they are 1/1 to be promoted having finished fourth last term and then lost 2-0 to Norwich City in the play-off final at Wembley in May.
