Karanka doubts Bamford return

Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka has admitted that Patrick Bamford is unlikely to return to Teesside for the 2015/16 campaign.

However, Karanka continues to be linked with West Ham United midfielder Stewart Downing and the veteran former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given.

Bamford scored 19 goals for Boro last term as Karanka's side reached the Championship play-off final, but the Chelsea youngster is unlikely to be heading back to the Riverside Stadium any time soon.

Karanka said: "I don't think Patrick's coming because he showed everybody last season that he can play in the Premier League and I am sure he has offers to play in the Premier League.

"He also has offers to play in other countries because he is a very good player."

Karanka has signed Alex Baptiste from Bolton this week, and said of any other possible new arrivals: "It's not a big list, and we are working. We know what type of player we need. We are working on certain positions and I hope we can do what we want to do.

"It's difficult to get Stewart Downing because he is a Premier League player. We are trying to get the squad as good as we can. I prefer to only sign players who can improve the squad."

Middlesbrough can be backed at 1/1 to be promoted from the Championship in the 2015/16 season and at 1/1 to win their opening game of the season on Sunday 9th August against Preston North End.
