Veteran Spanish forward Raul has announced that he will leave Schalke and quit European football at the end of the current campaign.

The 34-year-old former Real Madrid legend has spent the last two seasons with the Bundesliga club, helping the Gelsenkirchen outfit win the DFB-Pokal last term.

The decision has not been easy, but I thought about it for a long time.

This season they lie third in the Bundesliga and are on course to ensure a top-four finish which would secure Champions League football next season.

However, Raul will not be there to help them, as he has decided to opt for pastures new in the summer.

"The decision has not been easy, but I thought about it for a long time," Raul admitted to reporters. "My future is not in Europe.

"I still have enough confidence to play in the Bundesliga, but to me it's important that I spend more time with my family."

Raul and Schalke are in action on Sunday this weekend, they they travel to Augsburg, who are currently battling to secure their top-flight status for a second season.

The visitors are 5/4 to win at the SGL arena and 12/5 to gain a draw, with Raul 11/2 to open the scoring and add to his 14 league goals for the campaign.

His strike partner Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has netted 24 times in 29 Bundesliga outings so far this season.
