Socceroos defender Franjic leaves Roar

Brisbane Roar have seen a second big name depart since they won last season's A-League championship, with defender Ivan Franjic sold to Torpedo Moscow.

The long-serving right-back has followed leading scorer Besart Berisha through the door, joining the Russian side for an undisclosed fee.

Franjic started Australia's World Cup campaign as their first choice at right-back, only to suffer an injury in the opening game against Chile that ruled him out of their other two Group B games.

The 26-year-old scored 11 goals in his 113 games for the Roar over five seasons, after initially being signed as a short-term replacement for Andrew Packer in 2009.

Brisbane managing director Sean Dobson said the club had been negotiating with Torpedo for the past month before finalising a deal for the 10-cap Socceroo.

"We're satisfied with the final structure of the deal," said Dobson. "This is a fantastic opportunity for him to continue his career development by playing in an overseas league.

"He has played a big part in our recent success, playing over 100 games for Brisbane Roar, and we thank him for being a loyal servant to our football club over the past five years."

Franjic had been a semi-professional player and full-time carpenter before joining the Roar, who are 1/1 to win the FFA Cup. He helped the club win three championships in four seasons – the first two under Ange Postecoglou.

Brisbane are 1/1 to win the A-League Grand Final.

Dobson said Brisbane's squad for the new season had not yet been finalised, adding: "We're continually working hard to ensure we can recruit the right types of players into the squad. We will continue to refine and build a balanced squad through strong leadership, a focus on club culture and showing faith in our younger brigade of players."
