Sarota content to fight for place

Adam Sarota says he has no problem with being asked to prove himself at A-League champions Brisbane Roar, after sealing a loan move from FC Utrecht.

Fighting for his place under Mike Mulvey is an improvement from the situation he faced in Holland, where he was on the fringes of the Eredivisie club's squad. The Asian Cup is less than five months away, and Australia coach Ange Postecoglou has indicated the midfielder is well in contention for a place in his squad at the tournament, where the Socceroos are 1/1.

I still have to prove myself and that's what the trainer's told me.

Postecoglou has made it clear only players who are getting regular game time will be considered when the Socceroos host the tournament and Sarota would have been a long-shot had he remained in Utrecht. He had only featured once for his club so far this season, before being allowed to return to Australia on a season-long loan.

The 25-year-old, who has played three times for the Socceroos, did not have the most auspicious of starts to his time with the Roar, who are 1/1 to win the Grand Final. At his first training session on Friday, he was asked to play for the second XI in a scrimmage against Mulvey's first-choice team at Ballymore.

Sarota said: "I still have to prove myself and that's what the trainer's told me, which is a good thing. No one should ever come to a team and just play; it's also healthy for the team if everyone's pushing each other."

The Roar were dumped out of the FFA Cup on Tuesday, losing 2-0 to Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium. Before they meet the Reds again in a fortnight in Round 1 of the new season, they will take on NPL Queensland side Olympic FC on Wednesday.

Sarota said he was keen to play, and appreciates that he will now have the chance to earn Postecoglou's nod for the Asian Cup.

"The Asian Cup's definitely in the back of my mind but at the moment it's more about concentrating on the Roar and hopefully doing well here. If that goes well, hopefully (Cup selection) will also come," he said.
