Jets ponder Broxham promotion

Melbourne Victory are set to hand defender Leigh Broxham a shirt for just the second game this season against the Newcastle Jets.

The 24-year-old is one of the options coach Ange Postecoglou has to replace the suspended Adrian Leijer. The Victory are without Leijer after he picked up five yellow cards this season, while Mark Milligan is banned for two games for striking Jonatan Germano in last week's Melbourne derby.

We have got a number of games and this gives an opportunity to a couple of the other boys.

Broxham looks like he will edge out Petar Franjic, Matthew Foschini and Sam Gallagher, after he spent most of Thursday's training session in defence alongside 18-year-old Nick Ansell. Assistant coach Kevin Muscat said the selection was "not cemented yet".

He added: "There's been a couple of combinations tested throughout the week.

"Foschini will come in at right-back (for Diogo Ferreira, who has a groin injury), Jonny (Jonathan) Bru will come in in the midfield (for Milligan) but we'll make a decision on who is going to play central defender."

Muscat is not fazed by the prospect of changing the side, arguing that with four games in 16 days it was only to be expected.

"Unfortunately we are missing a couple through suspension but the reality is everyone is going to have to use their squad over this period of time," he said. "We have got a number of games and this gives an opportunity to a couple of the other boys. Adrian misses, 'Millsy' misses, Diogo is not just gives an opportunity to someone else.

"Is our depth going to be tested? Yes it is going to be. We have had to deal with players missing in the past through international duty.

"We have won without our boys being here that are in international teams. We are quite comfortable where we sit."

Victory are 5/6 to beat Newcastle Jets, who are 3/1. The home side are 9/1 to win 1-0.
