Emerton endorses Farina as coach

Sydney FC should hand Frank Farina the head coach's job on a full-time basis, insists midfielder Brett Emerton.

The former Blackburn Rovers star played under Farina for the Socceroos between 1999 and 2005, and believes he is the best man to take the Sky Blues forward.

I think he's done an exceptional job since he's come in.

Farina was handed the reins of the club on an interim basis after Ian Crook resigned just four games into the season. The 48-year-old has coached at club level in Australia since 1996, when he led first the Brisbane Strikers then the Marconi Stallions in the NSL.

He was sacked by Brisbane Roar in 2009, and the Sydney FC opportunity came after he spent time as head coach of Papua New Guinea.

''I think he's done an exceptional job since he's come in,'' Emerton said. "Results have improved and the boys seem to have responded in a positive manner. I can't see any reason why he's not a candidate to be the coach of this team next year.''

Farina would do his chances of landing the job full-time the power of good if he takes the Sky Blues back into the top-six with a win over the Roar on Sunday. But such is the congested nature of the table, a loss could send the club to the bottom, depending on results elsewhere.

Brazilian defenders Tiago Calvano and Fabio have served their one-match suspensions and return to the squad to face Brisbane. Emerton and Jason Culina are available, but captain Terry McFlynn is suspended.

Sydney FC are 9/5 to beat Brisbane Roar, who are 7/5 to take three points from the match. The Sky Blues are 11/1 to win the match 1-0.
