Nannes backs Gayle

Paceman Dirk Nannes says West Indies star Chris Gayle is central to Sydney Thunder's hopes of turning around their Big Bash League season.

Chris Gayle has struggled this season for the Thunder.

Gayle has struggled so far this season, mirroring the fortunes of the team, as the Thunder have suffered three defeats in as many games, with Gayle unable to click with his batting.

He has made just 20 runs over two innings, with a top score of 12.

But Nannes has backed his teammate to deliver when they take on the Hurricanes in Hobart on Sunday.

He believes he can return to the kind of form he showed in the inaugural BBL last year, when he had a strike rate of 150.

"If Chris Gayle bats 10 overs we win the game, pure and simple," Nannes declared.

"He is that important. We need to bowl half decently and group around him as a batting group.

"We've got decent players and if we have a half decent day we'll be okay.

"I don't think all is lost."

Nannes, who has been in good form with the ball this season, believes the Thunder's struggles are a matter of confidence.

The team is mired in an eight-game losing streak stretching back to last summer, and in danger of slipping out of the running for the title.

"There are good kids here but they're a few years away from being good (at this level)," Nannes pointed out.

If Chris Gayle bats 10 overs we win the game.

"I've played with guys who know their game inside out but these guys still don't know their game well enough.

"I'm used to winning but now I'm on the flipside."

Sydney Thunder are 13/10 to beat Hobart Hurricanes, who are 8/13.
