Tired Muguruza leaves it late
Garbine Muguruza is looking forward to playing Caroline Garcia in the quarter-finals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after defeating CiCi Bellis.
Last year's Wimbledon champion had to dig deep before seeing off her spirited American opponent 6-3 7-5.
The match did not finish until the early hours of the morning, and the relieved Spaniard said after her victory: "It's very late! I'm so surprised people are still here.
"I stayed focused all the time, even in the second set when she started playing much better. I tried to stay calm and wait until the last moment to close it out.
"Caroline is definitely one of the girls playing very well. We have already had a tough match, so I'm expecting another one."
Meanwhile, Daria Kasatkina caused an upset by beating the number seven seed Johanna Konta in a marathon encounter.
Kasatkina eventually prevailed 4-6 7-6 6-2, and said after her triumph: "It was such a tough match. We spent three hours on the court and now I feel a bit weird, because it's done. It was such a big battle, such a big fight. So I'm just happy that I survived."
Kasatkina will play Elena Vesnina, who knocked out Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets, in an all-Russian quarter-final in Dubai.
Muguruza is 4/6 to beat Garcia while Kasatkina is 4/9 to come out on top against Vesnina.
