Defending champion Roger Federer outlasted Marin Cilic in five sets to win a sixth Australian Open title and secure a 20th Grand Slam success.

Federer eventually won out 6-2 6-7 6-3 3-6 6-1 in a match in which Cilic fought hard all the way, before being swatted aside in the final set.

It's a dream come true and the fairytale continues.

The Swiss maestro is now four Grand Slam singles titles clear of his great rival Rafael Nadal - with Federer having a French Open title, eight Wimbledon titles and five US Open crowns to his name, alongside his six successes in Melbourne.

And Federer was clearly relieved at getting over the line after a hard-fought showdown with Croat Cilic, saying in his post-match presentation: "I'm happy it's over now -it's a dream come true and the fairytale continues. After the year I had last year, it's incredible."

In 2017 Federer opted to sit out the French Open after triumphing Down Under, with Nadal making the most of his absence to claim a tenth victory in Paris.

Federer is currently priced at 12/1 to win the French Open this year, with Nadal available at 4/5 and 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka 10/1.

Meanwhile, Cilic was pleased with his performance overall at the first Grand Slam of the year, while ruing not being able to get across the line and claim his second major title.

He added: "It was an amazing journey for me and it could have been the best two weeks of my life. I had the chance at the beginning of the fifth set, but he played a great match."

Cilic also lost to Federer in the final of Wimbledon last year, while his only Grand Slam success to date came at the 2014 US Open, where he beat the Swiss in straight sets at the semi-final stage.
