Marion Bartoli says she feels capable of playing at the highest level once again as she makes a return to competitive tennis.

The French player is back on the WTA circuit for the first time since retiring just after winning Wimbledon in 2013.

I don't think the level of tennis is so much better than when I won Wimbledon.

She played another returning player, Serena Williams in New York and says that was the first step in what she hopes will be a route back to the top of the women's game.

After losing to Williams in the Tie Break Tens exhibition event, Bartoli said: "It's been great so far. I've been enjoying the process of getting back into shape and being on the court and practising."

She aims to step up her comeback with a place in the Miami Open later this month and she has accepted a wild card into a tournament in Mexico in April.

She is now 33 but feels capable of returning to her best. "I don't think the level of tennis is so much better than when I won Wimbledon," she added. "It might have improved a bit but I think I can match that.

"If it's Wimbledon, of course, it would be very special because I won there, but I just want to enjoy this time back on the court. I've been having a lot of trouble over the last four or five years, so for me just to be feeling really happy again is already a victory."

Williams is 6/1 to win the French Open, the second Grand Slam of 2018 with Angelique Kerber 16/1 and Simona Halep priced at 5/1.
