Motu Premier wins at Gloucester
Motu Premier is on course for the Inter Dominion Championships at the end of the year after impressing at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
The classy four-year-old went off as hot favourite in the Marathon Pace (3309m) and lived up to the hype with a powerful win, as star reinsman took him to the front 2400m from home and never looked back.
The Bucket List was 4m behind in second in WA's longest trotting event of the season, while Major Rush finished a half-neck back in third place.
Trainer Ross Olivieri will set Motu Premier for the Inter Dominion, culminating in a $1.1 million final over 2936m at Gloucester Park, and Lewis is in no doubt he could compete with the best.
"I think he'll step up to Inters class," Lewis said. "He's a very good stayer who can run fast times."
Speaking after the win, Melbourne owner Merv Butterworth said the Marathon would be Motu Premier's last race before a spell, and confirmed the Inters are on the agenda.
"We want him to have a break before preparing for the Inters in November and December," he said.
"He was sent to Perth six months ahead of the Inters, so he had time to acclimatise before the series."
The New Zealand import won seven races in his homeland and three in Sydney before joining Olivieri's Oakford stable in May and has won four of five Gloucester Park starts.
