McEvoy ponders Sunlight start
Trainer Tony McEvoy admits he is toying with the idea of starting Sunlight in the Lightning Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville later this month.
The Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on 18th August was the intended starting point this campaign, but Sunlight has done so well her trainer is considering starting her earlier.
The first two races will tell us if we want to go through the sprint races like the McEwen or the Moir.Tony McEvoy
"She's done very well during her break, she didn't get too fat, I was concerned that she might get away from me spelling but she's done really well and grown a little bit" McEvoy said.
"She's in Adelaide and started galloping. The Lightning might be an option before the Quezette if I think she needs a hit-out.
"It's the very early stages but she's getting a tremendous base on her. I haven't tested if she's got better but the one thing I do know is she hasn't got any worse."
Sunlight won five straight in her second preparation including the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes defeating Estijaab and last raced when finishing third in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes on 24th March, and McEvoy said he is contemplating tackling older horses in the spring with Sunlight.
"The first two races will tell us if we want to go through the sprint races like the McEwen or the Moir," McEvoy said.
"I'm always concerned about taking on the older horses but if there's an opportunity for a filly with no weight on her back to run in a Group One I'll take it.
"My main thinking is three-year-olds and against her own group until she changes my mind."
