After a difficult 2017 season Phil Mickelson kicked off his 2018 campaign with a promising second place in the Safeway Open at the Silverado Resort in California.

The 47-year-old secured his best Tour result since he was runner-up at the 2016 Open Championship with a final round of 2-under-par 70 to finish the week at 12 under, three shots behind winner Brendan Steele.

I'm going to keep giving myself good chances and it will happen. I get on a course like Sheshan where I'm very comfortable.

With his last triumph at the 2013 Open his winless streak is closing in on three figures at 91 tournaments.

But no-one bettered his tally of 23 birdies last week and he's excited about his next start in two weeks at the HSBC Champions tournament in China.

"I'm going to keep giving myself good chances and it will happen," Mickelson said. "I get on a course like Sheshan where I'm very comfortable.

"I know the greens. I know the course well. I think I'll have a good week there."

Most of all, the veteran of 48 wins around the world is excited to have reacquainted himself with the heat of battle.

"It was fun to be in the mix," he said. "It was fun to have a chance."

The three-time Masters champion is 33/1 to win for a fourth time next year at Augusta National and 50/1 to repeat his Open success of four years ago.
