Defeat leaves Guardiola concerned

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has warned his players that they will need to be fully focused when they head into their Champions League quarter-final tie.

The Spaniard was speaking after seeing his side lose 2-1 at home to FC Basel in the second leg of their last-16 tie, a result which made little difference as a 4-0 first-leg win in Switzerland had all but sealed City's passage.

We just passed for itself and when that happens, that is not football.

However, with tougher tests ahead, Guardiola was far from happy with the performance of his players and warned that a repeat later on in the competition could prove very costly.

He told reporters: "Just to pass the ball for itself is nothing. The first half was quite good, but in the second half we forgot to attack, we forgot to play. The second half was really, really poor.

"It is not easy to play with a 4-0 lead. I think in the first half we showed we wanted to win the game. We created a lot of chances and we were good.

"But after 1-1 in the second half, it didn't happen. We just passed for itself and when that happens, that is not football.

"In the quarter-finals, this kind of situation is not going to happen - to play the second game 4-0 up - the rhythm will be completely different."

City are now available at 3/1 to win the Champions League this season, with Liverpool priced at 12/1 and holders Real Madrid 9/2.
