Germany defender Benedikt Howedes is determined to help Juventus enjoy continued success, having joined the club on an initial loan basis from Schalke.

The versatile 29-year-old also has an option for a permanent deal in place should he make 25 first-team appearances for Juve this season, meaning that Howedes is likely to have ended his time in Gelsenkirchen, which stretches back more than 15 years.

I am super proud to play for Juventus and will do my very best to enjoy a great season.

However, far from being sad at the prospect of leaving his only professional club to date, Howedes is looking forward to the fresh challenge of impressing with the Italian champions.

He told his new club's official TV station: "For me, Juventus is one of the biggest clubs in the world, one of the five biggest, and they are very successful in the last couple of years.

"I want to be part of it, to do my job here, to be successful in the future and do my best. I'm a multi-functional player in defence, I can play in the centre, left or right-back.

"I am super proud to play for Juventus and will do my very best to enjoy a great season."

Juve, who have won the Italian league title in each of the last six seasons, are 6/4 to make it seven in a row, while they are 20/1 to triumph in the Champions League - having lost in the final in two of the last three seasons.

Meanwhile, Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel admitted it was tough to see Howedes move on, but felt the Blues owed it to the player to grant his wish after his lengthy period of service.

He added: "It wasn't an easy decision for us to make, but because of his service to the club over the years, we want to allow him to fulfil his desire to join Juventus and agreed a loan for the player."
