Wenger wary of fine margins

Manager Arsene Wenger admits it will be a bitter pill to swallow if his Arsenal side just miss out on a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

The Gunners play host to rock-bottom and relegated Sunderland on Tuesday, before completing their league campaign at home to Everton next Sunday.

If we finish outside the top four it will be down to one point, and one point will be hard to swallow.

And they will probably need to win both games to have any chance of overhauling either Liverpool or Manchester City for a place in the Champions League next season.

Wenger accepts that his side may well miss out on the top four, even if they better their points tally of 71 from last season, which was good enough to secure second place behind Leicester City.

He told reporters ahead of the clash with the Black Cats at the Emirates Stadium: "We have 69 points and we can get to 75, which would be four points more than last year, so let’s focus on finishing as well as we can.

"I think the only chance we have now to be in the top four is to win all of our games.

"If we finish outside the top four it will be down to one point, and one point will be hard to swallow."

The Gunners are 1/10 to defeat Sunderland on Tuesday evening and are 15/2 to win the game 2-0, while Arsenal can be backed at 6/1 to secure a top-four finish come the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Wenger also admitted that even winning the FA Cup final against Chelsea would not make the season a success if they fail to earn a Champions League spot.

The Frenchman added: "It would mean this season has not gone as well as I had hoped at the start of the season, because I start the season wanting to win the Premier League.

"You are never satisfied, but what is encouraging is the way the team is playing recently and the way the ambition is back."
