Shelvey wants more of the same

Jonjo Shelvey hopes Sunday's superb 1-0 victory against Manchester United is the sign of things to come for Newcastle United.

Rafa Benitez's side, who had been dragged into a relegation battle after a poor run, secured their first victory at St James' Park since October thanks to Matt Ritchie's 65th-minute effort.

The three points lifted the Magpies up to 13th in the Premier League and they are now 7/2 to finish in the top half of the table and 1000/1 to be relegated.

Newcastle rode their luck at times and debutant goalkeeper Martin Dubravka made a string of fine saves but former Liverpool and Swansea City star Shelvey has urged the Magpies to build on their impressive triumph against Jose Mourinho's team.

He said: "I think we need to not just do that because it's Man U - I think we need to do that against every team, and that's obviously what we're going to keep trying to do.

"We can't really do anything in terms of influencing other results - it's just about us, and I thought we fought like dogs and thoroughly deserved the three points in the end.

"We've not got a game next week, so we can have a rest and keep working on the training pitch. That's one thing with the gaffer here - he'll always keep drilling us and never let us get ahead of ourselves. We just have to back that performance up with one at Bournemouth now."

Benitez's side can be backed at 16/5 to beat the Cherries on 24th February.
