Pep cool over Citizens standing

Pep Guardiola says he remains confident in his Manchester City side, despite the pressure of being favourites with many people to win the Premier League title.

The Citizens could only manage third place in Guardiola's first season in charge at the Etihad Stadium, with Chelsea claiming the title and Tottenham Hotspur finishing as runners-up.

I feel the same pressure I had last season. We are here to win games.

However, Guardiola is ready for a renewed challenge this term, having freshened up his squad with the signings of Ederson, Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy, Danilo and Bernardo Silva.

He told reporters: "Last season at my first press conference we were favourites, so nothing has changed. I was confident then, too.

"I feel the same pressure I had last season. We are here to win games.

"We have spent, of course, but all the teams have spent. We tried to make a younger squad. We decided to put energy in the team for the next five years.

"Hopefully, next season I will be here and we are not going to spend how we have this season."

The Citizens are 1/80 to win the Premier League this season, with Manchester United priced at 66/1 and Chelsea 80/1.

Meanwhile, Guardiola has confirmed that both summer signing Mendy and Ilkay Gundogan are not ready to feature against newly-promoted Brighton & Hove Albion in the first game of the new season on Saturday.

The Seagulls have not faced City in a league fixture for almost two decades but the two sides did meet in the League Cup in September 2008, when Albion won 5-3 on penalties after the game ended 2-2 after extra-time.
