Ozil prefers to stay put

Germany international playmaker Mesut Ozil has confirmed that he would prefer to remain with Arsenal this summer.

The 28-year-old is out of contract with the Gunners next summer and his future at the Emirates Stadium has been called into question, along with that of team-mate Alexis Sanchez, whose current deal also expires in the summer of 2018.

It is definitely my preference to stay.

However, former Real Madrid ace Ozil has told reporters during the club's pre-season tour of Australia and China that he would rather renew talks over a new contract, having joined the Gunners just under four years ago.

As reported by The Guardian, he told reporters: "It is definitely my preference to stay. Once everyone is back in London we will sit down and discuss about the future.

"For now the most important thing is our pre-season and getting through the tour, training and getting fitness. When I'm back in London, we will sit down and discuss."

Meanwhile, Ozil has admitted that should Chile striker Sanchez opt to move on, that would be a big blow to the club, who have signed left-back Sead Kolasinac and striker Alexandre Lacazette already this summer.

He added: "It would hit the team quite hard if he left, because he is a player who always delivers.

"It would be a setback to winning the title, but, in the end, it's the player’s decision. I hope Alexis stays, but I don't know what his status is, to be honest."

Sanchez has scored 53 Premier League goals in 103 appearances since joining the Gunners from Barcelona three years ago.

He has been linked with interest from the likes of Bayern Munich, PSG and Manchester City, with the player vowing to make his decision known soon after the completion of the recently-finished Confederations Cup.

Arsenal are priced at 80/1 to be crowned Premier League champions next season, while they are 9/1 to retain the FA Cup and 7/1 to triumph in the Europa League.
