Jose Mourinho says he and Paul Pogba are in agreement over what is the Frenchman's best position, claiming he has no plans to change his role.
Discussions over where the former Juventus man would be best placed to play for the Red Devils have taken place this week with suggestions Mourinho should deploy him further forward.
The Portuguese disagrees with that suggestion though and says his idea of a box-to-box midfielder is still one who has defensive responsibilities.
"'Box to box' to play free of defensive duties, that's not 'box to box.' That's a box in the box and stay in the box and doesn't move from the 'box to box.'
"I think now it looks like we are going to a different concept of 'box to box.' For me Paul is a midfield player. He's not a left-back, he's not a striker so when people say what's his best position for Paul to play -- Paul is a midfield player."
Mourinho went on to add that he had no worries about Pogba's defensive ability, claiming he has the ability to be a success in the middle of the park in the Premier League.
"It depends on the tactical system the team plays. You can play with two, with one, play with three. But he will always be a midfield player. It doesn't matter the tactical system the team plays, Paul is a midfield player," he added.
"And as a midfield player, it's difficult to find a midfield player with more potential than Paul has because Paul has everything."
Mourinho left Pogba out of his starting line-up for last week's win over Huddersfield and said there has been no negative reaction from the 24-year-old in preparation for Sunday's game at Newcastle.
United are 4/7 to hand Mourinho his first Premier League win at St James' Park this weekend, while the Magpies are 11/2 and the draw 16/5.
The Red Devils are 1/2000 to win the Premier League without Man City.
