Jose Mourinho was happy to see his much-changed Manchester United team coming away from the Riverside with a 3-1 over Middlesbrough.

The Red Devils showed seven changes from the team that defeated Rostov in the Europa League at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Goals from Marouane Fellaini and Jesse Lingard either side of half-time had Man United in control before sub Rudy Gestede gave the hosts something to chase.

We don't have plan B, C, D, E, F and G - but we have M, N, O, P and S.

Middlesbrough finally started to take the game to their visitors but a slip from Victor Valdes in stoppage time allowed Antonio Valencia to walk the ball over the line and wrap up the three points.

The win lifted Man United above Everton and Arsenal into fifth spot and Mourinho was content despite suggesting his line-up wasn't exactly first choice.

"[I applaud] our attitude and desire and our way of thinking. We don't have plan B, C, D, E, F and G - but we have M, N, O, P and S," said the Portuguese.

"It is fantastic because we manage in the same week, to go to the quarter-finals of the Europa League which is an important target for us."

This was Manchester United's 600th victory in the Premier League - making them the first side to reach the landmark.

They also finish the day inside the top five of the Premier League table for the first time in 184 days.

"We got these three points that keep us in the race for the fourth position so we still have two doors for Champions League football next season," added the United boss.

"These guys gave everything, we started the game really well. Valdes made three fantastic saves before our first goal. We controlled everything until our second goal."

Man United are 2/5 to win their next game at home to West Brom on Saturday. The Baggies are 8/1 while the draw is 4/1.
