Uruguay defender Martin Caceres is determined to help new club Southampton enjoy a successful final few months of the season.

The 29-year-old centre-half has joined the Saints on an initial deal running until the end of the season, having been a free agent since leaving Juventus at the end of last season.

I want to help my team-mates try to win a trophy and finish as high as we possibly can in the Premier League table.

Caceres claimed five Serie A titles with Juve, as well as winning La Liga and the Champions League during his time with Barcelona.

He suffered a serious Achilles injury which ruined the finale of his Juve spell, but is now back up to full fitness and is looking forward to the fresh challenge of trying to prove himself in England.

He told his new club's official website: "I want to be able to bring something to my new team-mates and help push as hard as we can until the end of the season.

"We've got a (League Cup) final at the end of next week and obviously I want to help my team-mates try to win a trophy and finish as high as we possibly can in the Premier League table."

Southampton are 9/2 to defeat Manchester United in normal time in the EFL Cup final at Wembley a week on Sunday and are 11/1 to win 1-0 in 90 minutes, with Saints priced at 5/2 to lift the trophy.

Meanwhile, Saints executive director of football Les Reed is delighted with the arrival of Caceres, who will help plug the gap left by the loss of Virgil van Dijk to an ankle injury.

He added: "In a tough situation for us, losing Virgil to injury, he will bring experience, talent and character. He has played in the biggest of games and will provide depth to our squad."
