Southgate issues form warning

England boss Gareth Southgate has issued a warning that only players who are in form will be getting into his next Three Lions squad.

Southgate is currently preparing for an international friendly against world champions Germany next month, before a  2018 World Cup qualifier against Lithuania on 26th March.

The former Middlesbrough boss, who replaced Sam Allardyce in the Wembley hot seat, is adamant that a big name alone will not get players selected and form will of course play its role.

He told the Daily Telegraph: "I'm very conscious I've got to get the balance right because ultimately my responsibility is to produce a winning England team.

"I never pick on reputation - form has to come into it. You have to look at the opposition and the type of game you're expecting and select the players best suited to that.

"We have players of great potential but at the moment we're 13th in the world. We've got to be better, everything we do has got to be better. Even being second in the world isn't good enough, we have to be the best we can be, and that's the best."

England are 12/1 to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia, while reigning champions Germany are 8/1 to retain their title.
