Sampaoli upbeat after stalemate
Jorge Sampaoli remains confident that his Argentina team will qualify for the World Cup even after they were held to a goalless draw by Peru in Buenos Aires.
The stalemate leaves Argentina in sixth spot in CONMEBOL qualifying and in danger of missing out on qualifying for Russia.
Argentina visit Ecuador on Tuesday, while Colombia and Peru, who are fourth and fifth respectively, play each other in the final round of qualification fixtures.
"I am still confident that we will be at the World Cup," insisted Sampaoli. "Today was a very good game. We just missed a goal. I am very hopeful and excited about what is coming.
"The team never gave up, put in a huge effort and deserved another result. [Lionel] Messi played a great game, created chances and gave good passes."
If Argentina can beat Ecuador it will guarantee them at least a place in a play-off.
Brazil have finished at the top of the qualifying standings, while Uruguay are currently second and Chile third.
During qualifying Argentina have lost to Paraguay, Ecuador, Brazil and Bolivia, as well as being held to two draws by both Venezuela and Peru. They have also drawn with Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay.
Argentina are 4/9 to beat Ecuador and 6/1 to win the match 1-0.
