Dier handed captain's armband
Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier will captain England in Tuesday's friendly international against Switzerland in Leicester.
Gareth Southgate has also confirmed that Dier's Spurs team-mate Harry Kane will be rested for the match.
There looks set to be a raft of changes to the England team compared to the one that started Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Nations League.
Jack Butland, James Tarkowski, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Fabian Delph and Danny Welbeck are all being tipped to be in Southgate's starting line-up at the King Power Stadium.
"I thought this was a good opportunity to do it [rest Kane]," Southgate said. "Harry falls in the category in which we have several players where we have to watch how much they play.
"It was a short break with no pre-season and everybody was back earlier than I am sure everybody would have expected for club matches, although that is entirely understandable.
"This is one of those occasions where we want to look at whether we are doing the right thing with the players for our long-term benefit. So I thought this was a good opportunity to do it."
Dele Alli has withdrawn from the squad with a minor muscle strain but is expected to be fit enough to feature in Saturday's Premier League clash between Spurs and Liverpool.
England have called up Leicester City duo Ben Chilwell and Demarai Gray for the Switzerland friendly which they are 10/11 to win. A 2-0 victory for Southgate's team can be backed at 7/1 while England are available at 15/8 to win the match to nil.
