Defoe revels in England recall
Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe says he never gave on making a return to the England squad having been selected ahead of upcoming games against Germany and Lithuania.
The Black Cats forward has impressed in the Premier League this season and his performances have not gone unnoticed by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.
England are currently preparing for a friendly on Wednesday against Germany, before their World Cup Group F qualifier against Lithuania on Sunday.
Defoe is delighted to be back in the Three Lions frame and feels Southgate is the right man to lead the national side into the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
He told reporters: "There were times I did think maybe I won't get in. But it didn't stop me from getting my head down and working hard and hope I got a chance to represent my country again."
He added: "It feels different coming in as one of the senior lads. You're like a sponge when you come in as a youngster.
"Now you want to try to help the younger lads. Gareth Southgate has always impressed me. He's been there and done it - played in major tournaments.
"He's the perfect man for the job."
England are 15/4 to beat Germany and 14/1 to win the match 2-1. Meanwhile, Southgate's team are 18/1 to win next year's World Cup in Russia.
