Butland pulls out of England squad
Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland has broken a finger and withdrawn from the England squad for Friday's friendly against Germany.
Butland, who had been expected to start the match, suffered the injury in training.
It is the latest blow for Gareth Southgate who is already without Tottenham trio Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Harry Winks, Manchester City duo Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph, and Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.
Southgate has announced that Eric Dier will captain the Three Lions against Germany while Ruben Loftus-Cheek will start the match.
Meanwhile, Southgate has hailed Manchester City defender John Stones who he believes is having an excellent campaign.
The England boss said of the 23-year-old former Barnsley and Everton defender: "I've always said to him people will talk to you about just kicking the ball out.
"For me, if you want to do that, that's fine. You'll be the same as many others. But if you want to play for me with the Under-21s, I want you to keep doing the things that make you different. And I think he is different.
"He has as much composure as any defender I've seen in Europe. He's got a really bright future and he's the type of defender we want playing for our country."
England are 16/5 to beat Germany on Friday and 7/2 to keep a clean sheet in the match while Southgate's team can be backed at 40/1 to win the 2018 World Cup outright.
