Villa go second after derby win

Colin Calderwood has urged Aston Villa's players to hold on to second place in the Championship after Sunday's 2-0 derby win against Birmingham.

Second half goals from Albert Adomah and Conor Hourihane at Villa Park handed the bragging rights to Villa fans, while a seventh successive Championship win moved the side above Derby and into the second automatic promotion place.

The Blues finished with ten men after Cheikh Ndoye was sent off for two bookings late on and they remain in a relegation battle.

It's about keeping ahead of the teams below us now. That's more important than worrying about Wolves.

Wolves are 12 points clear at the top and already look certain of a place in the Premier Leage next season and, while Calderwood has dismissed the possibility of Villa catching them, he wants to go up with them and avoid the lottery of the play-offs.

The assistant boss was speaking to the media in the absence of manager Steve Bruce, who was at the game but has family issues to deal with following the recent death of his father and his mother is also ill.

And Calderwood said: "Our focus is not on the top.

"It's about keeping ahead of the teams below us now. That's more important than worrying about Wolves."

On Bruce, he said: "He was excellent at half-time, trying to keep them calm and focused.

"He told them to continue what they have done, produce more chances, and don't be disappointed that you haven't had the break.

"The second half started quietly and then we scored with our first better moment.

"That certainly helped and it squeezed the balance of the game and the moments went our way.

"He took it as a normal game, picking his team, making the substitutions and getting about the players in a normal way.

"The win was a shaft of light for him."

Villa are 11/10 to be promoted, while they are priced at 31/10 to win their next league game against fellow promotion hopefuls Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday. The Cottagers are available at 1/1 to win and the draw is 13/5.
