Bayern Munich have confirmed that they are interested in signing Germany international midfielder Leon Goretzka from Bundesliga rivals Schalke.

The 22-year-old is out of contract with Schalke next summer, with a number of top clubs across Europe monitoring his situation.

He is a Germany international and we can say that we are interested in him.

And Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has admitted that his club are one of the potential bidders for Goretzka, who impressed for the German national team at the Confederations Cup last summer.

He told the German media: "Leon Goretzka is a great player, that's clear.

"He is a Schalke player and we obviously respect that, but he is a Germany international and we can say that we are interested in him."

Barcelona, Juventus and Arsenal have all been mentioned as possible suitors for Goretzka, who has scored six times in 12 appearances for Die Mannschaft.

Earlier, Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel had played down talk of Goretzka having already decided on making Bayern his next destination.

He told Sport 1: "Leon has not told us anything about the reports he has decided to leave the club. I and the club trust Leon and his representative, we have been in regular contact."

Schalke are second in the Bundesliga, 11 points adrift of Bayern, after the first half of the season and are unbeaten in their last 11 league games.

They are 1/3 to top the Bundesliga without Bayern come the end of the season, with Borussia Dortmund 5/2 and RB Leipzig 1000/1.
