Socceroos aim for 'relentless' display

Ange Postecoglou is not about to depart from his tactics when Australia face Honduras in the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play-off.

The Socceroos face the CONCACAF side in San Pedro Sula at the weekend in the first leg knowing the opposition are very strong at home.

Postecoglou has introduced an all-action physical, pressing and possession game in recent months that has seen the side switch to a back three.

It hasn't worked out too well in terms of results, though. In the 11 matches since shedding the four-man defence, Australia have kept just one clean sheet, and none in the past nine.

The extra running that we make them do here can perhaps tire them quicker in that second game.

The first leg will be a big challenge, as Honduras have reached the last two World Cups on the back of a formidable home record - they've only lost four of their 25 home qualifiers this decade.

Keeper Mat Ryan says the Socceroos will continue to stand or fall by Postecoglou's tactics.

"We'll come out and stick to our fundamentals," added the Brighton stopper. "We'll spend the next couple of days to educate ourselves as much as we can on (Honduras') strengths and weaknesses and what we need to do in this next game.

"We're a possession-based football team; we want to starve the opposition of the ball," he added. "We want to be relentless and get at them.

"One of our fundamentals is keeping the ball in play as long as we can...keeping the ball and moving the opposition around. The extra running that we make them do here can perhaps tire them quicker in that second game."

Australia have been forced to come through two final play-off rounds after missing out on the top two in their group in the third round of qualifying.

They only lost one of their ten games, but finished behind second-placed Saudi Arabia on goal difference.

Australia are 13/5 to win the first leg against Honduras, who are 11/8 with the draw 21/10.

The Socceroos are 4/5 to qualify for the finals in Russia.
