Jets win soured by Vargas shocker
Newcastle Jets delight at their 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar was overshadowed by an injury to Ronald Vargas.
The Venezuelan import was taken off with a broken and dislocated ankle at Suncorp Stadium.
He's already had surgery and the Jets expect him to be out for the rest of the season.
Coach Ernie Merrick said: "This was a terrible accident and we're all feeling for Ron, but it was no one's fault.
"The players and the staff have been really affected by this injury. He may have only been here for a short time, but Ron has already made an impression on all of us and that speaks to the quality of the guy - we'll all be there to support him throughout his recovery."
The Jets were able to cope with Vargas' departure at the time and come away with their second win in the first three rounds.
But Merrick said the win meant nothing in the light of Vargas' injury, which he described as one of the worst he had seen.
Asked what he'd said to his players during the injury break, the Jets coach added: "I just said we have to re-focus, it was a pretty bad injury, some of the boys saw it, I just tried to get them to re-focus, re-organise the midfield. They did a good job under very difficult circumstances."
Roy O'Donovan put Newcastle ahead on 12 minutes, with his fifth goal in just three appearances this season.
An own goal from Nigel Boogaard brought Brisbane back level three minutes before the break but almost immediately, Dimi Petratos hit back with a superb strike.
Newcastle are 7/1 to win the Grand Final.
The Jets are 17/10 to win their next game against Western Sydney, who are 6/4 with the draw 13/5.
