Boogaard blow for Jets

Newcastle Jets captain Nigel Boogaard could miss the rest of the A-League season after being injured in the win against Sydney FC.

The defender fractured his tibia and suffered a torn calf against the defending champions.

The impact of the way Nigel landed and the hyperextension of his knee has put the joint under serious strain.

He hyperextended his left knee when challenging for the ball late on in Saturday's clash at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Boogaard saw a specialist on Monday who confirmed the extent of his injury. Club physio Justin Dougherty says the skipper could be sidelined for more than two months.

The Grand Final is on 5th May, so his chances of returning before the start of next season are slim.

"The impact of the way Nigel landed and the hyperextension of his knee has put the joint under serious strain," said Dougherty.
"This has resulted in a compression fracture at the top of the tibia, with Nigel also tearing his calf.

"Nigel will be looking at a recovery time from somewhere between 6 to 10 weeks - which will be dependant on a number of other factors."

Coach Ernie Merrick said Boogaard would be doing his best during the recovery and rehab process.

"He will be hard-pressed to get back to full fitness before finals which is disappointing for Nigel given the way he's played all season," he added. "No doubt it's a big loss for us, he's a leader on and off the pitch but I believe we've got guys that can step in and do a job which we've seen right across the season."

Meanwhile, the Jets have confirmed that winger Andrew Nabbout is moving to J-League side Urawa Red Diamonds.

The club accepted an undisclosed fee for him over the weekend and he has agreed personal terms.

Newcastle are 4/5 to win the Grand Final.

The Jets are 17/10 to feature in the Grand Final with Sydney FC.
