Waites safely through to round two
Defending champion Scott Waites is through to the second round of the 2017 BDO World Darts Championship following a 3-1 victory over Dennis Harbour at Lakeside.
Waites started the match with a 142 checkout in the opening set and he soon raced into a 2-0 lead. Harbour, who was a quarter-finalist 12 months ago, kept the match alive by taking the third set but Scotty 2 Hotty hit two 15-dart legs in the final set to book his place in the next round.
The 2016 winner will now face Mark McGeeney for a place in the last eight and is 4/7 to win that tie. The two-time Lakeside winner is now 1212/1 to lift the trophy on January 15.
Meanwhile, rising Dutch star Danny Noppert made his Lakeside debut on Tuesday, beating Canada’s David Cameron 3-1 and finishing with the highest average of the tournament so far with 98.06.
Noppert was handed the number three seed this year after a very successful build-up to the World Championships. The Dutchman has already won the Den Haag Open, German Open, Scottish Open and Masters of Waregem.
The 26-year-old is 10/11 to win the BDO World Darts Championship at the first attempt. He is in the bottom half of the draw and has an all-Dutch clash with Richard Veenstra to look forward to in the second round.
Wesley Harms became the latest big name casualty to fall in the first round this year as he was whitewashed by Krzysztof Ratajski on Tuesday. The Polish player came through a final set decider against Willem Mandigers in the preliminary round but only needed three sets to defeat the two-time semi-finalist.
Ratajski has been with the BDO since 2007 but this is the first time the 40-year-old has progressed into the second round, where he will face Darius Labanauskas.
