Unterbuchner stuns Phillips
Michael Unterbuchner kept his run in the 2018 BDO World Darts Championship going with a victory over number 14 seed Martin Phillips on Thursday as he clinched a spot in the quarter-finals.
The German qualifier has now won three matches in the tournament and will face Dutchman Richard Veenstra in the last eight on Saturday.
The Lakeside debutant won the opening two sets against Phillips but then got pegged back by his opponent who looked to be taking control of the game when he wrapped up the fourth set. Unterbuchner found a second gear in the fifth set though before holding his nerve to finish the match with a 45 per cent checkout rate.
Meanwhile, Veenstra wasted no time in despatching number six seed Geert De Vos 4-0. Flyers is the only Dutchman left of the 10 players from the Netherlands that started the tournament and he conceded just three legs in his victory over the former World Darts Trophy winner.
The world number 12 hit seven 180s and averaged 90.85 against De Vos. Veenstra reached the semi-finals at Lakeside in 2016 and he is 1/2 to reach the last four once again, while he can be backed at 1212/1 to win the title.
Welshman Jim Williams is the third highest seed left in the competition after he overcame Conan Whitehead in a thrilling contest 4-3. The Finder Masters runner-up came from 3-2 down to win the match which featured a flurry of 180s and big checkouts.
Williams and Whitehead know each other well as they play together in pairs' competitions. Williams faces defending champion Glen Durrant in the quarter-finals and is 5/1 to cause an upset against the number one seed.
