Joe Daniher is on course to play in Essendon's final pre-season game to get himself ready for round one of the new AFL season.
The forward has increased his training load considerably over the past two weeks, and he's looking at playing in the second of their JLT Community Series clashes with Geelong.
Team-mate Tom Bellchambers says the spearhead is doing well in his recovery from an osteitis pubis problem that limited him to just two games last year.
The 2017 best and fairest winner could get the chance to prove his fitness against the Cats at GMHBA Stadium on 7th March.
Bellchambers said: "He's always out here wanting to train, wanting to do more. So it's a conservative approach with Joe, being a long-term injury but off the last couple of weeks I reckon he'd be hoping to play some JLT.
"He's ramped up his training and he's coping really well. They'll ramp it up a bit more I guess leading into the season and hopefully he continues to cope with it."
Daniher was the Bombers' leading goalkicker in four consecutive seasons starting in 2014.
Ruckman Bellchambers himself is hopeful of playing one JLT game in his preparation for the new season.
After playing a career-high 20 games last year he had shoulder surgery late in the season but is now back training with the main group.
"I've been pretty happy with the summer," he said. "Last pre-season I had knee surgery in late January, so compared to last year I've got a lot of work in and I'm excited for the season."
