Bowman switches Winx focus
Jockey Hugh Bowman says it was important to push Winx to the line on Saturday as attentions now turn to the Group 1 $4million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).
The super mare extended her winning streak to 16, topped the $10million prizemoney barrier and scored her 11th career Group 1 success in the $1million China Horse Club George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens.
Le Romain and Chautauqua, both absolutely outstanding gallopers, had no answer to the great mare as they trailed her home to finish second and third respectively.
Winx finished seven-and-a-half lengths ahead of Le Romain, and Bowman said: "She will be going 1500m to 2000m (Queen Elizabeth) in three weeks and I felt it was an important exercise to push her to the line today — and she was special.
"I feel like she is in the prime of her career. I knew on the way to the barriers she meant business today. My only worry is am I going to get on her, canter to the gates one day and feel that engine just isn't there."
Winx stole the show on Golden Slipper day and trainer Chris Waller was blown away by her performance.
"I didn't expect her to win like that, she is just an amazing horse," Waller said. "Then to hear the crowd, it is incredible to have a horse that you're associated with who is so well received."
Winx is 7/50 to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
