Proteas take consistent approach

South Africa are banking on consistency of selection being influential in their upcoming ICC Champions Trophy campaign.

Convenor of selectors Linda Zondi says the 15-man squad selected for the tournament in England in June covers all bases.

The depth of talent should also cover the contrasting conditions that can be on offer in the UK when the eighth edition of the eight-team event gets under way on June 1st.

"We have been working with this group of players for the last two seasons where our key emphasis has been consistency in selection," Zondi said.

"That has shown in how this group has performed over the last while, which has resulted in winning three consecutive ODI series.

"We feel we have a squad that covers every scenario that we could possibly be faced with on the tour. Most importantly, every player knows and understands their role and value within the squad."

Proteas captain AB de Villiers and fast bowler Morne Morkel have both been selected, however, Dale Steyn is not deemed to be fit enough and will instead attempt to return to international cricket in the Test series versus England starting in July.

The veteran paceman will step up his fitness bid on the South Africa A tour of England that precedes the battle between the full sides.

The Proteas are available at 4/1 to win the Champions Trophy, with India priced at 9/2 and Pakistan available at 12/1.
