Wells in line for Magpies bow

Collingwood expect to hand Daniel Wells his debut in Tuesday's clash with Essendon.

The former North Melbourne midfielder has been on the sidelines so far this season due to a lingering calf injury.

But he came through a VFL outing last week to put himself in the frame to face the Bombers in the Anzac Day meeting.

The 32-year-old has the potential to help the Magpies out of their early-season slump, with Nathan Buckley's side having lost three of their four games so far.

Wells completed a full training session on Thursday, and Buckley indicated he was in his plans for the round five clash.

"'Wellsy' pulled [up] out of the VFL game fit and firing. He's got to get through a couple of training sessions but we anticipate he'll be fit to play and we look forward to getting him to wear the black and white stripes on Tuesday," said the coach.

The Magpies have struggled with their ball use so far this season, but Buckley says it won't just be down to Wells to solve that problem.

"It just happens to be the area we're falling down in particular at the moment. Daniel isn't going to solve all of those ills and we're doing a lot of work on it, but he won't hurt us either," added the coach.

"We're looking forward to him coming in and doing what he does, but at the same time we don't expect him to be the saviour in that regard."

Mason Cox is in contention to face the Bombers, but Buckley says neither Jordan De Goey nor Josh Daicos will play.

De Goey is the subject of a club-imposed suspension, while the coach feels father-son prospect Daicos is not yet ready for his senior debut.

The Magpies have beaten Essendon in six of the past seven Anzac Day meetings.

Collingwood are 14/25 to beat Essendon, who are 6/4.
